Found a large colony of showy milkweed along the southern shore of Swan Lake. Several locals said it could be found here… apparently it is somewhat rare in this area. It was growing in a pebble beach just below the high water line. It seems likely that the flatter terrain, well-drained soil, water source and southern exposure of this beach made the conditions right for the milkweed to grow.
Unfortunately Labor Day crowds seemed to have wrecked a lot of it, as trampled/ripped up stalks were everywhere. However, there were still plenty of healthy plants and some were beginning to produce seeds. Recorded some guitar in the hopes of hitting Ascepias speciosa’s resonant frequency.
