Red Bluff

Found a spot to sow before entering endless agricultural fields. Planting by pastureland seems safer than planting by monocrop agriculture. In the research paper “Pesticide Contamination of Milkweeds Across the Agricultural, Urban, and Open Spaces of Low-Elevation Northern California,” Chris Halsch and team found pesticides in every single milkweed sample they took near agricultural land – they’re ubiquitous around the Central Valley. That’s bad news for the monarchs, especially considering this area is such a crucial corridor for them. The bird in this recording is singing a warning call to the monarchs: “watch out for pesticides in the miles ahead!”
