Happy winter solstice! This is the sound of me imagining the sound of a colony of monarchs flying in the midday sun at Natural Bridges State Park. As heard at the end of this field recording, I strike up a conversation with a fellow monarch watcher. She said that three years ago, there were 9,000 monarchs overwintering at Natural Bridges and that this season there’s a paltry 500(ish).
This listening/soundwalk prompt is a way to mourn for the monarchs who didn’t make it to their overwintering grounds this season. It’s also a way to imagine a future where a whole colony of monarchs will be inhabiting this place again.
