As I’ve been tracing waterways this entire trip — often riding through windy country roads that parallel rivers and creeks — I thought I’d perform a tao song about water at this waystation. It’s verse 8 of the Tao Te Ching. Here, Lao Tzu uses water as a metaphor for the highest virtue. Water nourishes without striving and gathers in low places that people dislike – that is, it goes where gravity sends it even of it seems undesirable. Pretty soon gravity will be taking me downhill too: to the Central Valley!
